Bilinguals in Late Mesopotamian Scholarship (BLMS)
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
The researchers did not expect to be able to assemble and catalogue such a large number of Sumerian-Akkadian bilingual texts, since it was never clear to anyone exactly how many cuneiform tablets containing bilingual textual material were to be found in published and unpublished archives. We expected some 500 entries in tolal of incantations and were surprised at finding three times that number, not to mention other categories of bilingual tablets which were being catalogued in Philadelphia. For the first time, we have a good grasp of the size of this corpus of texts which is vital for Sumerian and Akkadian lexicography as well as textual studies. Without the present project, the publication of the very lengthy Utukku Lemnutu series in 2015 would not have been possible. The manuscript is now submitted, but work on these incantations has been ongoing continuously since 1975. The process of digitalization of the copies, and especially assigning correct line numbering to the autograph copies according to the text edition, made the process of checking the readings possible. Furthermore, the mechanical process of checking the readings of every line of text as preparation for lemmatization greatly enhanced the scientific value of the work as a whole, since a lexicon requires the most accurate readings possible as the basis for defining words in context.
