Theory of the interplay between sensory cortices and hippocampus in memory formation and retrieval (B02)
Subject Area

We will study two phenomena to which the hippocampal and cortical memory systems contribute distinctly, but also strongly interact with one another: systems consolidation and recognition memory. Systems consolidation will be modelled as a process, in which cross-temporal information in episodic memory is recoded as associative information and stored in semantic memory. The same model will be used to account for recognition memory, which will be the result of a decision-making process fed by episodic and semantic memory. Accounting for these two phenomena in the same theoretical framework will be a major advance in our understanding of the function of the cortico-hippocampal circuit in long-term memory.
