The Rhine-Meuse delta in the Netherlands can be regarded as one of the best investigated deltas in the world concerning questions of delta evolution. Nevertheless the interaction between the coastal area and the fluvial system is still poorly understood. Knowledge of delta-evolution processes is important as deltas and river plains are often densely populated and also sites where natural resources are formed. The object of the investigations proposed here is to find out how the rising sea level influenced the alluvial architecture of the delta during the Holocene. For the Rhine- Meuse delta there is a huge dataset available which will be used to generate geological maps. Using an elevation dataset with unprecedented accuracy allows to generate very precise 3-D models of the investigation area. By sampling and dating of peat-layers the influence of the sea-level rise during the Holocene can be modelled and the palaeogeographic development reconstructed. The results will allow to establish an alluvial architecture model which in turn may predict future development. General factors and processes governing delta evolution will be distinguished; therefore the results will be valid for other deltas as well, including ancient deltas of the geological past.
