Liquid emulsions are used in metalworking processes as in grinding or tuming as lubricant and/or cooling fluid (cutting fluid). In the industrial process chain, the used emulsions may depart from the ideal state and composition due to continuous use in the process. E.g. the emulsified phase concentration or its droplet size distribution may change or the emulsion components composition is altered due to physical, chemical and/or biological processes. Control of the emulsion quality in metalworking processes is a major task to prolong machine operating times, to protect the environment and to enhance the machine operation economical competition. The project aims at the development of an Emulsion-Process-Monitor in metalworking processes that can be used in-process and on-line to control the emulsion stability and quality. Non-intrusive metrology, as static light scattering, diffraction and spectrometry, are employed in a targeted combination to evaluate the emulsion quality. The measuring procedure is controlled by an appropriate model derived algorithm. The measurement device and the data acquisition and operation are developed by the German side of the cooperation partners at Univ. Bremen, while the data evaluation procedures based on multivariate models and numerical modelling and simulation tools are developed by the Brazilian side at USP.
