Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

How does feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) regulate the growth and evolution of galaxies? This question has been discussed widely in recent years as cosmological studies have shown that AGN feedback may avoid the formation of too massive and blue present-day galaxies and result in down-sizing in star formation. In this project, the “radio mode” jet feedback scenario was to be examined in high resolution to understand the physical processes occurring and their impact on galaxy evolution. Within three sub-projects, we have examined the interaction of powerful jets with a clumpy galactic gaseous disk, the details of their interaction with the clumps, the consequences for the galactic star formation and distribution of stars and explore the impact of jet activity in a cosmological zoom simulation in a still ongoing sub-project. We found that observed asymmetries in medium-sized jets may be substantially attributed to strong feedback in galaxies and they can be directly linked by a statistical approach to the global properties of the interstellar medium of the galaxy. The violent interaction of a jet is found to have considerable impact on the galactic star formation rate in high-redshift galaxies (formation of ∼> 10^9 M⊙ stars within only one duty cycle) with clear signatures imprinted on the formed stars.
