Final Report Abstract

Das Graduiertenkolleg “Symmetriebrechung in fundamentalen Wechselwirkungen” ist angetreten, um durch interdisziplinäre Ansätze grundlegende physikalische Fragen zu erforschen. Durch die Zusammenarbeit von Arbeitsgruppen aus verschiedenen Instituten und zwischen Theoretikern und Experimentalphysikern entstand an der Universität Mainz ein lebhaftes, kreatives Forschungsumfeld. Das Thema “Symmetriebrechung in fundamentalen Wechselwirkungen” des Graduiertenkollegs ist durch die in die Förderperiode fallende Entdeckung des Higgs-Bosons so aktuell wie nie zuvor. Generell bilden Symmetrien und Symmetriebrechung ein Leitmotiv der modernen Physik. Neben der elektroschwachen Symmetriebrechung spielt im Bereich der Hadronenphysik die chirale Symmetriebrechung eine wichtige Rolle. Ebenso sind Verletzungen diskreter Symmetrien in fundamentalen Wechselwirkungen, wie zum Beispiel die CP-Verletzung, von essentieller Bedeutung für das Verständnis unseres Universums. Die Forschungsschwerpunkte des Graduiertenkollegs gliederten sich in die Themenkomplexe “Ursprung der Masse und Struktur der Materie”, “Erweiterungen des Standardmodells” sowie “Verletzungen fundamentaler Symmetrien”. Das Graduiertenkolleg eröffnete den Promovierenden ein strukturiertes und balanciertes Qualifikationsprogramm. Dies beinhaltete auf die Themen des Kollegs abgestimmte Vorlesungen und Blockkurse, ein wöchentliches Seminar sowie eine jährliche Klausurtagung. Über das Fachliche hinaus vermittelte das Kolleg Schlüsselqualifikationen, “Soft Skills” und die Regeln guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis.
