The project aims on the investigation and optimization of THz electromagnetic wave generation in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks or arrays of stacks, using a combination of transport measurement, direct electromagnetic wave detection and Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy. The project combines the specialties of the research groups to image current and electric field distributions in superconducting structures (Tübingen) and the know-how and facilities to fabricate all-superconducting intrinsic Josephson stacks and arrays of stacks (Tsukuba). The goal is to understand the mechanism of THz electromagnetic wave generation and optimize the intrinsic Josephson junction stack structures with respect to tunability, power output and functionality.
