Meson Production in Antinucleon-Reactions on Atomic Nuclei: Theoretical Foundations for AIC and PANDA Experiments
Final Report Abstract
Antiproton interactions with nucleons and nuclei have been investigated theoretically. Inspired and guided by microscopic approaches antinucleon self-energies have been derived in a consistent approach for an energy region, extended much wider than before. The results are also appropriate as ISI in antiproton-nucleus reactions. Work on meson production was initiated and performed in some detail for two-pion exit channels. Meson-nucleus self-energies were investigated, also for the sake of accounting for pion-nucleus FSI over large energy ranges on a quantitative level. As an initially unforeseen aspect the production of strangeness and charm by antiproton annihilation was investigated. An unforeseen frustrating and time-consuming result of the project is the failure or inability of microscopic field-theoretical methods to provide a convergent and consistent description of antiproton-nucleus interactions. That forced us to change to the phenomenological approach which, however, has its undisputable advantages and merits. The rich material obtained within this project will lead to further publications on the antiproton and meson optical potentials, the description of meson production, meson-nucleus self-energies at higher energies, and the newly derived developments of eikonal theory.
