Adaptive Particle-In-Cell simulations

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term from 2008 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 60352348

Many problems in high field plasma, space-plasma, and magnetized plasma are of kinetic nature with a large range of intrinsic scales. They cannot be solved properly without adaptive kinetic simulation methods as is Adaptive-Mesh-Refinement (AMR) Particle-In-Cell (PIC). AMR-PIC is a simulation method capable of solving Vlasov-Maxwell systems with adaptive resolution. AMR-PIC requires specific data structures in order to work. For reasons of computational performance and reliability the latter must support multi-threaded computation, effective load balancing, and the implementation of established numerical concepts for fields and particles. The required numerical resolution in an AMR simulation is determined by resolution predictors. The focus should be on generic resolution prediction, which is a complex but independent of the underlying physical model. Rapid growth or depletion of particles require efficient concepts of particle management.
