Kontrollierte Festkörperreaktionen im Nanometerbereich unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Kirkendall-Effekts
Final Report Abstract
We have investigated temperature-driven solid state reactions (SSRs) and the Kirkendall effect in a number of system pairs (Al2O3/ZnO, Fe2O3/ZnO, CoxOY/ZnO, Fe2O3/CoxOY, Fe2O3/CoxOY/ZnO, Fe2O3/NixOy, CoxOy/NixOy, AbOs/NixOY, Fe2O3/MgO, CoxOy/MgO, Al2O3/MgO). In the Al2O3/ZnO material system we studied the effects of stress on void formation by the Kirkendall effect. Comparing planar with V-trench samples proved that mechanical stress plays a significant role for the morphology of the Kirkendall voids. We also applied the stress effect to core-shell nanowires and fabricated novel "pea pod" like nanowire structures. We identify two systems: Fe2O3/ZnO and Fe2O3/CoxOY/ZnO, in which we observe solid-state reactions in combination with the Kirkendall effect and pronounced ferromagnetism for the first time. Challenges with SSRs in other systems we investigated were due to phase separation in Co oxide or stoichiometry changes of Ni oxide at high temperatures. We propose a novel way to "steam out" micro- and nanostructures using an annealing step at 400 °C of the Al2O3/MgO system. We demonstrate the generality of this process by applying it to flat and nanopatterned surfaces.
