Entwicklungsmethoden für interaktive Umgebungen, Designverfahren für physikalische und hybride Interaktion im Ubiquitous Computing
Final Report Abstract
Over the course of the project PREMIUM we have investigated the integration of development and design techniques from the industrial and artistic design area with the engineering-oriented design of novel ubiquitous computing systems. We have covered a wide range of types of systems, from hybrid tangible/touch user interfaces and gesture-based interfaces to remote interaction with large media façades. The key contribution we made was to implement prototyping toolkits meant to assist designers, researchers and engineers in such unfamiliar and novel design contexts. Following a user centered design process we have created prototyping toolkits on different fidelity levels and for different forms of hybrid interactive systems. In phases of user observation, usability studies, experimentation and case studies in industrial companies we observed the practical utilization of our approach and revealed insights into how our implementations were perceived in the design process of envisioning, prototyping, pre-testing and finally deploying hybrid interactive systems. As means for evaluation we utilized and applied both qualitative and quantitative research methods that were adapted individually to suit the specific contexts. We summarized that there is a need for assistive auxiliary means that can help to ease and speed up design processes when developing hybrid interactive systems from scratch. Hence, we have provided contributions in novel and unexplored research areas, which has been recognized by the scientific community. Through the dissemination of our results in the form of scientific papers, books, tutorials, blog posts, and code repositories others can pick up our approach and utilize our design process tools in the context of creating hybrid interactive systems.
