Learning new synthetic techniques and characterisation methods for promising materials in the internationally leading group of Professor Kanatzidis is what this proposal is about. The project will investigate the exploratory synthesis and characterisation of novel metal subchalcogenides and metal oxo-chalcogenides. Taking a multidisciplinary approach involving chemists, physicists and electrical engineers, we will synthesise thermoelectric materials with optimised properties. These materials could lead to a more efficient use of energy when coupled to exothermic processes. Metal oxo-chalcogenides will be synthesised by applying different fluxes. The emphasis of this part is on developing generalized synthesis methodologies. Suitably designed fluxes are expected to give rise to semiconducting metal oxo-chalcogenide materials with interesting properties such as ionexchange or non-linear optical second harmonic generation.
