Project Details
Turbulent Fluxes and thermal convection in a valley
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
from 2008 to 2011
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 71739118
The proposed project will investigate the energy exchange between the atmosphere and the underlying surface during the COPS experiment, which is essential to understand the development of the non-synoptical convection. A main task is the quality control of surface flux measurements for all flux sites and its dependence on the footprint and possible internal boundary layers. The second task is the identification of situations with free convection starting in the valley and its dependency on land use and width of the valley. The formation of the convection in the valley and the whole boundary layer will be studied with large eddy simulation. This allows one to relate the convection in the valley with the grid scale of meso-scale models.
