The position of the mitotic spindle in polarized cells determines symmetry or asymmetry of cell division. Spindle positioning in asymmetrically dividing S. cerevisiae relies on astral microtubule function and the conserved Kar9 and dynein complexes. Recently, we have identified new modes of Kar9 regulation and a novel role of dynein in spindle assembly. We will continue with our studies on Kar9 ubiquitylation, on the coordination of spindle positioning with spindle assembly and on nuclear envelope dynamics during nuclear migration in yeast.
