Low-dimensional structures in high magnetic fields

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2008 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 67049287

The goal of this project is to investigate the electron and holes dynamics of low-dimensional structures in pulsed high magnetic fields. Measurements are performed utilizing non-destructive magnetic field pulses up to 60 T with a rise time of about 10 ms. Two actual topics are proposed to be studied. A) The energy-wavevector dispersion and negative differential velocity effects onnovel dilute nitride alloys, In(PN) and In(SbN), will be investigated using magnetotunneling spectroscopy. High magnetic field measurements can provide a means of probing the energywavevector dispersions and determining fundamental electronic properties, such as carrier mobility and effective masses. B) The interplay between Zeeman interaction and spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional electron/hole gas in InGaAs-based quantum wells will be studied. The magnitude of spin-orbit coupling can be artificially controlled by the applied gate voltages and the indium content in quantum wells. A deeper understanding of physics of these structures can lead to developing novel band-structure engineering concepts for spintronics and high frequency electronics.
