Project Details
FZT 82: Rudolf Virchow Center for Experimental Biomedicine
Subject Area
Medicine
Term
from 2001 to 2013
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5485447
The Rudolf-Virchow-Center for Experimental Biomedicine will promote interdisciplinary research and education at the interface between medicine and biology. Its research will focus on "target-proteins". These are proteins with key regulatory functions in biological processes that are of interest not only for academic research but also to the biotech and the pharmaceutical industry as potential target for new drugs. It will be the task of the Rudolf Virchow Center to study such target proteins in a multi-disciplinary approach ranging from molecular studies on the isolated proteins to complex experiments on intact organisms. The Rudolf Virchow Center will be composed of the following elements:
(1) Institute for Junior Research Groups, providing junior scientists with an independent research team, including DFG-funded and industry-funded groups.
(2) Core Center for key research methods including structural biology (X-ray and NMR), protein mass spectroscopy, advanced microscopy, DNA-array and transgenic technologies.
(3) Research professorships analogous to those of the Howard Hughes System to be awarded on a competitive basis by an Advisory Board.
(4) Bachelor and masters programme in biomedicine plus a graduate school for biomedicine, developed from the established MD/PhD-programme.
(5) Public Science Center for information and teaching of biomedicine to the public and school programmes.
