Interactions and variations of structure on various length scales are used for developing functional materials and chemical systems. The term hierarchic characterizes the order of interaction potentials which dominate the resulting length and time scales. This is achieved by assembling atomic and molecular components to nanoscopic structures and arranging them in a defined order. New physical and chemical functions of materials and systems are achieved by limiting the size of single objects and by the interaction of the components on a nanoscopic length scale. The interaction of energy and entropy in dynamic and dissipative nanostructures does not only determine but can also optimize the organization of superstructures. The functionality of inorganic components and of building units is combined with the ability of molecular compounds to selforganize. In the first phase of the cooperative project, a basic understanding of defined ensembles and functional elements shall be achieved. A further step is to strive for an active control of the functionalities by external fields. The key aspects of the research are: (a) a strong synthetic background for building nano-objects and supramolecular functional units, (b) a distinct expertise in scanning probe microscopy, (c) the connection of solid state and surface sciences with molecular concepts, (d) the combination of self-organization with micro-lithography and (e) the integration of functional components and methods from the field of molecular biology.
