Subject of the collaborative research centre 493 are the religions of the Ancient Near East including the eastern Mediterranean focussed on the functional aspects for their societies. Our research in the functions of religions aims to reveal basic relations between religion and society. Five basic dimensions can be distinguished:-- functions of religion concerning the natural environment,-- functions of religion concerning the wholeness of human society, -- functions of religion concerning other aspects of culture,-- functions of religion concerning societal groups, -- functions of religion concerning the individual within the family.The civilisations investigated by the collaborative research centre 493 include ancient Greece, Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine/Israel, Persia, Egypt, and northern Africa. The chronological range covers the 4 th. Millenium B.C. up to the Islamic era. The basic goal of the collaborative research is to gain new perspectives on the field of ancient history and the history of religions. The cooperation includes 15 historical, theological and social science disciplines in 15 subprojects.
