SFB 524:  Materials and Structures in Revitalisation of Buildings

Subject Area Construction Engineering and Architecture
Term from 1999 to 2006
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483552

Subject of the collaborative research centre are existing buildings. They are regarded as systems changing during their life-cycle with stochastic qualities about which only incomplete and uncertain information exist. Engineering properties must be assessed first in order to adjust them sustainable according to purposes and demands. Each assessment must be reproducable formally. The comprehensive task in assessing existing buildings is to process diverse but in-complete and uncertain information describing an existing and continously changing reality. This information must be systemized semantically in a general usable way, described persistently and made availabe to other processes.Research methods in the collaborative research centre are:-- methods of non-destructive testing (information gathering) about materials and structures,-- probabilistic methods in structural mechanics,-- decision supporting methods in information processing,-- optimization of models with incomplete and/or contradicting information and goals. They are aimed at system analysis, model construction and model verfication. In sampling and assesssing stochastic methods are applied. Information from qualitative assessments is transfered to scaled data to process ("compute") them quantitatively. As supplements are used-- experimental techniques of model verification,-- special methods/techniques in the subprojects.
