SFB 482:  Phenomenon Weimar-Jena. Culture around 1800

Subject Area Humanities
Social and Behavioural Sciences
Term from 1998 to 2010
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5482527

In Weimar-Jena, around 1800, enlightenment, classicism, idealism, and romanticism were simultaneously present. The collaborative research centre aims at reconsidering this blend of intellectual movements from the viewpoints of history, aesthetics, and natural science. Due to academic specialization, research has hitherto focused on single aspects of a cultural whole, thus neglecting the interrelatedness of culture in Weimar and Jena. The interaction between the Weimar Court and the Jena University has never been taken into account. It is the intention of the collaborative research centre to break new ground in this field by integrating methodologically different approaches, and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the culture of Weimar-Jena, a culture which was both exemplary and unique.
