SFB 512:  Cyclones and the North Atlantic Climate System

The collaborative research centre 512 deals with the climate system of the North Atlantic, i.e. its physical states and their variability on different time scales. The basic goal is to understand the interactions between the subsystems atmosphere-ice-ocean-continental surface and to quantify the cause of its variability. The investigations can be devided into two parts. On one side, the variability of the coupled North Atlantic climate system is analyzed theoretically by the use of models. Within this, a main aspect is the role of stochastical and dynamic-deterministical interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean. On the other side, the impact is investigated of certain regions and processes with in the North Atlantic climate system - mainly concentrated on the Arctic Ocean/ European Nordic Seas. This is an area which reacts very sensiblely upon global climate signals and acts significantly on the North Atlantic climate system. The investigations are based on regional models close to reality and on the analysis of atmospheric and ocean ice data collected by the collaborative research centre as well as of existing ones. Within the broad spectrum of climate variabilities the collaborative research centre concentrates on seasonal and decadal time scales. For the long run, one objective is to forecast short term climate changes.
