SFB 543:  The influence of ultrasonic waves on metal forming processes

Subject Area Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 1998 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481966

In the context of this special research program both experimentally and theoretically the ultrasonic influences on forming processes isexamined. Here on the one hand the reduction of the forming forces andon the other hand the influence of the friction between workpiece andvibrating dies are examined. FEM process simulations serve for to theunderstanding and optimization of the processes.Apart from the development of high speed generators and actuators forperformances up to 20 KW the oscillation energy introduction into thearea between workpiece and die, influencing the friction, and over theforming tools into the workpiece, influencing the material volume, is of interest. Here it is objective to minimize the losses of energy due to joints and toolbearings. For the process feedback control measuringsystems are developed, which correspond on the one hand to the precision demands and to embrace by a durable structure on the other hand the application in transforming systems with vibrating tools.Beyond that medicine-technical investigations are executed, which are to clarify the influence of the ultrasonic on humans and whose results into the development of high performance systems for ultrasonic-influenced forming processes. Therefore the disciplines forming technology, controlling, engineering, mechanical engineering, measuring technique, oscillation technique, mechanics and bio-medicine are addressed in this special research program.By interdisciplinary co-operation of the institutes IBMT, IFU, ISW, IFW, ITO, ISD, IAM and the MPA the basic studies are pursued theoretically and experimentally.
