SFB 545:  Molecular Mechanism of Genetically Determined Diseases

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 1997 to 2004
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481635

The aim of the collaborative research centre 545 is to investigate basic molecular mechanisms that determine the cause or the development of genetic diseases. Due to the variety of genetically determined diseases the collaborative research centre is focused on the genetic regulation of transport processes and their perturbations in genetic disorders. In biological systems, transport is required for the regulated distribution of molecules within cells, organs or the whole organism and for the transfer of information. The collaborative research centre is therefore divided into two sections: Section A - metabolism and its genetically determined disorders, Section B - signal transduction and its genetically determined disorders. Part A consists of 5 projects, and part B of 6 projects. In these projects, the genetic basis of disorders such as atherosclerosis, renal failure, mental retardation or cancer development as well as genetic regulations of immune responses are studied.
