The research efforts of the collaborative research centre 501 aim at the foundation of a novel approach to software development based on generic methods. The term "generic methods" is used here to denote description techniques and corresponding generation techniques which support reuse of existing software and development process in a systematic way. The automatic generation of programs is a long-term vision and might be achieved in well-defined application areas with complete generic program specifications. The results of the collaborative research centre substantially improve our present software development technology, allowing to develop high quality software with predictable costs.
