SFB 465:  Development and Manipulation of pluripotent Cells

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 1996 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5480614

The collaborative research centre 465 was established in 1996 and aims to examine the molecular basis of cell fate decisions by pluripotent stem cells, and the potential use of these cells for tissue regeneration. 14 projects from five different Institutes and Clinics at the University of Würzburg are focussing on the examination of different progenitor and stem cell types for example cells from neural tissue, blood and skin for their potential to regenerate. The projects try to find the answers as to the question why a cell takes different pathways of development and in which way it settles for a special type of cell. They will make feasible approaches to deliberately intervene in the process of differentiation of such cells. It can be expected that in the long run advances in cell biology will form the foundation for new strategies in gene therapy and tissue reconstruction. This project is presently the only German collaborative research centre that examines the qualities of pluripotent and stem cells. Its outcome will have an influence on the guideline discussion of future human stem cell research in Germany. The members of the collaborative research centre are aware of the controversial discussion of this topic: on the one hand there should be no misuse of human cells; on the other hand the deliberate manipulation of these cells could contribute towards relieving patients´ suffering.
