The object of the proposed research project is the extension of the empirical model approaches according to Kienzle and Taylor with which the variables tool life and cutting forces are determined. In manufacturing, the models are primarily used for process design, but their validity at significantly increased temperatures is limited. Therefore, the models are to be extended by a suitable mathematical approach that describes the temperature dependence based on physical quantities from the machining theory according to Ernst and Merchant. The experimental basis is "hot cutting", which allows the investigation of different workpiece output temperatures. As a result of the temperature increase, a reduction of the material strength and the elastic modulus follows, which leads to a reduction of the mechanical tool loads and the cutting forces. The optimized and extended model approaches are intended to enable more efficient as well as more economical “hot cutting” in a targeted manner, which is particularly suitable for material specifications with outstanding mechanical properties such as a high yield strengths. The resulting findings will ultimately be used to identify technologically and economically promising fields of application for “hot cutting”.
