SFB 396:  Robust, shortened process sequences for lightweight sheet parts

Subject Area Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 1996 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5479836

The overall objective of the collaborative research centre 396 is to develop ideas for a modern way of manufacture by using robust, shortened and therefore low cost process sequences for sheet light weight parts. The focus on light weight construction originates from the desire for weight reduction on automotive parts which results in reduction of the primary energy consumption in transportation and adds a contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Lightweight construction is not limited to the use of aluminium. The potentials of high strength steel grades and plastics are also used, especially in load-fitted designs. By the use of innovative processes and methods in planning, manufacturing and assembly, process sequences for the manufacturing of high quality parts can be shortened while keeping or even improving the quality standards. This also reduces product development time and production costs. The example of sheet light weight parts is ideal to prove the potentials of such a strategy. The examined process sequences not only comprise the manufacturing process itself but also extend to all phases of product development from product design until final assembly. This leads to the structure of the collaborative research centre 396 with today 12 subprojects in the following areas: (A) Integrated product design and process planning, (B) Process reduction by adopted material compounds,(C) Integrated manufacturing and assembly.
