SFB 377:  Photoionisation and Charge Separation in Large Molecules,Clusters and in the Condensed Phase

Subject Area Chemistry
Term from 1995 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5479254

The collaborative research centre 377 is mainly concerned with the explanation of ionisation and charge separation processes on the basis of a microscopic description of the energetics and dynamics. In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the coupling mechanisms of different systems, the time evolution of conformational changes which accompany the charge separation will be under investigation. The molecular systems are chosen in such a way, that the relevant electronic states can be sufficiently well defined, not only experimentally but also theoretically, so that the charge separation mechanisms can be well characterized. In order to separate the solvent effect, due to time-dependent long-range polarisation interactions, from intra molecular couplings, we study molecular clusters of variable size, which provide information about the build up of the solvation of the donor and acceptor units. A particular focus is on the ultrashort initial time evolution on the solvation dynamics in the femtosecond regime. In the condensed phase the investigations include the solvation dynamics of electrons in water, after photoionization the solvation dynamics for collision-induced charge separation processes on surfaces photoinduce charge separation processes in polymers and in onedimensional nanostructures such as the DNA strang.
