Project Details
Home Outside and Inside – Artistic Self-positioning of Psychiatric Patients around 1900 (C06)
Subject Area
Art History
Term
since 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 517096657
The subproject examines art by people who lived in psychiatric institutions in German-speaking countries between 1840 and 1945 and whose works are preserved in the Prinzhorn Collection in Heidelberg, as well as psychiatric history documents on the respective institutions under the perspective of home(s). The phenomenon of institutional psychiatry is given a new perspective from its emotional side, and conclusions can also be drawn about ideas of home and belonging in mainstream society, as the excluded people drew on this matrix and often allowed its elements to emerge particularly clearly in their works.
