SFB 298:  Deformation and failure in metallic and granular structures

Subject Area Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 1994 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5476568

Main goal of the collaborative research centre 298 is to contribute to a better understanding of the connection between deformations in technical and natural structures and the failure mechanisms induced by external loads. When designing a technical product it must be guaranteed, on the one hand, that inadmissible values of deformations are not assumed and, on the other hand, in case these are unavoidable, that via a better physical insight they are becoming better understood and perhaps avoidable. An important goal is to establish by basic engineering research, its mathematical foundation and numerical implementation, the fundamental instrumentation that allows the prediction and thus avoidance of undesired deformations or inadmissible motions and therefore prevention of possible dangers. The collaborative research centre 298 is intentionally an interdisciplinary program and combines researchers from applied mathematics, fracture and damage mechanics, geotechnique, continuum mechanics, material sciences, mechanics of granular media, numerical mathematics and mechanics, metal forming and materials technology.
