FOR 552: Principles of Sheet Metal Hot Forming of Quenchenable Steels
Subject Area
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term
from 2004 to 2010
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5471163
Within the scope of the Research Unit basic investigations on sheet metal hot forming of quenchenable steels will be carried out. The aim is to get a comprehension for the entire process and for the different influencing factors which are directly affecting the manufacturing and the properties of the final components. The problems of the so far empirical developed production process should be detected and dealt with, so that through a principle scientific examination of the process sequence and the proceeding processes inside the material, a reliable production design could be realised and parts according to the high quality requirements could be manufactured.
With regard to the procedure of sheet metal hot forming a robust process has to be created. Thereby a lot of attention has to be paid to the final result regarding the desired strength properties by adequate good forming properties. To achieve this kind of properties it is necessary to subdivide the process in different question parts. The temperature profile during the whole manufacturing process is the most significant topic. During the production the forming properties, the design of the tool, the pre- or post preparing steps like cutting and assembling and the properties of the manufactured unit are directly influenced by the characteristic temperatures and cooling rates.
Additionally to the experimental investigations, which start with a principle description and modelling of the material properties and continue with realistic component experiments, every task will be analysed through computer added methods. Thereby the particular challenge is represented by the simulation of the microstructure development and the numeric visualisation of the manufacturing process.
