GRK 1504: Mass, Spectrum, Symmetry: Particle Physics in the Era of the Large Hadron Collider
Final Report Abstract
Eingebettet in internationale Kollaborationen verknüpft das Forschungsprogramm des Graduiertenkollegs 1504 “Masse, Spektrum, Symmetrie: Teilchenphysik in der /Ara des Large Hadron Colliders” die zentralen Fragen der Physik des Mikro- und Makrokosmos. Leitthema ist die Physik am Large Hadron Collider (LHC), der seit dem Jahr 2010 hochenergetische Proton-Proton-Stöße aufzeichnet und im Jahr 2012 zur Entdeckung des seit Jahrzehnten gesuchten Higgs-Bosons geführt hat — dem letzten noch fehlenden Baustein des Standardmodells der Elementarteilchenphysik. Im Graduiertenkolleg forschen experimentell und theoretisch arbeitende Physiker und Physikerinnen aus den Bereichen Elementarteilchenphysik (Experiment und Phänomenologie), Stringtheorie, Quantenfeldtheorie, Gittereichfeldtheorie sowie Astroteilchenphysik und Kosmologie zusammen. Die außerordentliche fachliche Breite der beteiligten Forschungsfelder spiegelt die Breite der wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen wider. Trotz des fulminanten Erfolges des Standardmodells deuten empirische Ergebnisse aus dem Bereich Neutrinophysik und Astroteilchenphysik auf Physik jenseits des Standardmodells hin. Wie die „Neue Physik“ in der Natur realisiert ist, ist bislang völlig unklar. Es ist sogar denkbar, dass zu ihrer Beschreibung vollkommen neue theoretische Konzepte erforderlich sind. In Laborexperimenten haben die beteiligten experimentellen Gruppen intensiv nach verschiedenen Szenarien neuer Physik gesucht. So wurde etwa nach zusätzlichen Higgs-Bosonen, seltenen Zerfallen des Higgsbosons, supersymmetrischen Teilchen, Majorana-Neutrinos und dem im Standardmodell verbotenen neutrinolosen doppeltem ß-Zerfall gesucht. Im Rahmen der Suchen nach einer weiteren standardmodellartigen Quarkfamilie konnte die Existenz einer solchen ausgeschlossen werden. Neben der direkten Suche nach Neuer Physik wurde nach potentiellen Abweichungen vom Standardmodell gesucht. Dabei profitierten die experimentellen Untersuchungen von der Zusammenarbeit mit den theoretisch arbeitenden Gruppen im Bereich Phänomenologie und Gittereichfeldtheorie. In der Phänomenologie wurden mit störungstheoretischen Methoden die Vorhersagen für die Produktion schwerer Quarks, neuer bzw. supersymmetrischer Teilchen verbessert, sowie die Simulation von Prozessen in und jenseits des Standardmodells weiterentwickelt. Dazu wurden auch neue Methoden entwickelt, deren formale Aspekte zu einer fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit der mathematischen Physik geführt haben. Zu Fragestellungen, die mit störungstheoretischen Methoden nicht zu beantworten sind, hat die Gittereichfeldtheorie wichtige Beiträge geliefert. Die Gittereichfeldtheorie berechnet mit Hilfe von Computersimulationen Effekte der starken Wechselwirkung. In diesem Bereich wurden z. B. Fortschritte bei der Berechnung von Größen erzielt, die für die theoretischen Vorhersagen von Präzisionsmessungen zur Suche nach Physik jenseits des Standardmodells benötigt werden. In den Forschungen zur Quantenfeld- und Stringtheorie wurden wichtige Arbeiten verfasst, die insbesondere zu einem besseren Verständnis der mathematischen Strukturen des Standardmodells führen können. Hier lag der Fokus des Interesses im Bereich supersymmetrischer Theorien, sowie deren Beziehungen zur Gravitation. Weiterhin wurden innovative Methoden untersucht, um Streuprozesse am LHC mit alternativen Methoden zu berechnen. In der Gammastrahlungsastronomie gelang es mit dem Cherenkov-Teleskop H.E.S.S. bei der Suche nach dunkler Materie, die Massenverteilung der dunklen Materie im Zentrum unserer Milchstraße besser einzuschränken. Mit dem zukünftigen Cherenkov-Telescope-Array (CTA) wird mit hoherer Sensitivität nach dunkler Materie über deren Annhilationsstrahlung gesucht werden können. Auch die Messung von hochenergetischen Elektronen und Positronen mit dem MAGIC-Teleskop genauso wie die Suche nach hochenergetischen Neutrinos mit dem IceCube-Neutrino-Teleskop waren bei Suchen nach dunkler Materie von Bedeutung. Schiesslich wurden wichtige Arbeiten zum Verständnis der sogenannten dunklen Energie und der Messung der Expansionsrate des Universums mit Hilfe von Beobachtungen weit entfernter Supernovae durchgeführt.
