The German Network of Specialised Information Systems for Research : Coordination and Development

The Specialised Information Services for Research are organised as a network and are to become part of a national information infrastructure for which a longer-term funding per-spective is essential. Discussions between the Specialised Information Services supporting institutions in the Specialised Information Services Steering Committee, the Specialised Information Services Working Group, the Committee on Scientific Library Services and In-formation Systems and the German Research Foundation and Infrastructure Funding De-partment have shown that longer-term project funding for the Specialised Information Ser-vices in the form of a “FIDplus” funding programme aims to establish a rapid expansion and consolidation of the overall structure of the Specialised Information Services network. In order to make a significant contribution to the successful transition of qualified Specialised Information Services to the FID plus funding format, the existing process must be intensified and further developed through a comprehensive networking of the individual Specialised Information Services information infrastructures into an overall Specialised Information Ser-vices system. This project proposal, with a total duration of 36 months, is being submitted by three Spe-cialised Information Services institutions. In this consortium, one Specialised Information Services institution is responsible for one of the following three areas: governance, technol-ogy and marketing/communication. However, the implementation is supported by the entire network and provides for the activation and cooperation of actors from the entire Special-ised Information Services system. A Specialised Information Services Office at SUB Ham-burg supports the implementation and coordination of the measures in order to ensure the successful further development of the overall Specialised Information Services structure. In addition, an evaluation with the Specialised Information Services communities and external experts will be carried out in the third year of the project in order to gain insights for future organizational development under the framework conditions of the “FIDplus” funding pro-gramme.
