Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

We were able to achieve the goals that we originally set. This included the detailed studies of the interstellar medium in high-redshift quasars by using state-of-the art observations obtained at various radio/millimeter facilities, including the GBT, Effelsberg, (E)VLA and the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. Key results are the first detection of high-density tracer molecules, the first spatially resolved imaging of the molecular ISM of high-redshift quasar hosts, the first studies of the J=1 CO transition (the best tracer for the total molecular gas mass) in a sample of high-redshift quasars, and constraining high–z QSO SEDs. Lately, we have extended this study to ionized carbon, which we have proven to be a powerful tracer of the star-forming interstellar medium. We made strong use of the upgraded IRAM PdBI interferometer and we used the newly available broad band-width receivers at the PdBI and the EVLA to search for molecular gas emission in objects that have so far have escaped the detection of gas. The studies funded through our SPP grant have provided crucial insights on the relation between the central AGN/QSO activity and star formation in the host galaxies.
