Hydrodynamics of spray/wall interaction
Final Report Abstract
The proposed research was aimed at the experimental and theoretical / numerical investigation of the hydrodynamics of drop and spray impact onto a rigid target. The specific aim of the project focused on the description of the wall film flow generated by single drop impact onto steady and wavy liquid wall films and in the prediction of the spray impact behavior in relation to the wall film topology. The results are essential for the correct modelling of heat transfer associated with spray impact (e. g. in application to spray cooling) and in the description of the quality of spray coating processes. The study is a necessary step towards the modelling of inclined spray impact, relevant to most practical applications. Within the framework of this project a three-dimensional, two-component (3D-2C) micro-PIV system was designed and tested, with which the wall film flow could be characterized. This system is based on a combination of a micro-PlV system with laser induced fluorescence and uses two optical abberations (astigmatism and the spherical abberation) to measure the velocity profile in the wall film. The phenomena were modeled using an advanced free-surface capturing model based on the two-fluid formulation of the classical Volume-of-Fluid method. The results are used for the theoretical modelling of the velocity field in the wall film and its fluctuations.
