Final Report Abstract
The project has successfully attacked the problem of generating shear waves in a model system (dusty plasma) of a liquid. It allowed observation of the wave motion with "quasi-atomic" resolution, which is not possible in real liquids. The key features of these waves • Dispersion • Damping • Existence of a long-wavelength cut-off could be verified and show quantitative agreement with the most-advanced models in this field. For these experiments, a novel heating method for particle suspensions was introduced. In the data analysis, the Spatial Fourier Analysis of Complex Wavenumbers was critically compared with the Singular Value Decomposition method.
