Prediction of respiration losses is a weak link in the estimation of forest productivity from first principles. The objective of the project is to quantify respiration losses of the woody component of two commercial conifer tree species (Picea mariana, Pinus banksiana) with respect to their growth rates in order to improve our ability to predict their net carbon uptake and growth. Information provided by the proposed work will enhance our understanding of the links between productivity and environmental variables. This will be translate into better tools for predicting forest productivity as a function of climate change, disturbances and forest practices.
