Final Report Abstract

The Triassic-Jurassic boundary mass-extinction event (T-J; 201.2 Ma) is increasingly being linked to the degassing of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, one of the largest flood basalt provinces of the Phanerozoic. Particularly the role of exhalated CO2 and SO2 remains to be elucidated. Previously, elevated pCOs has been inferred from two pronounced negative C-isotope excursions occurring in bulk organic matter in the boundary interval in several sections in Europe. However, a large positive organic C-isotope excursion marks the lowermost Jurassic in British Columbia. A pilot study was initiated in collaboration with Jonathan Payne (Stanford University) and Adam Tomasovych (Chicago University) to investigate TJ boundary sections in the Southern Alps (Italy) and the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia). The aim was to generate high-resolution C-isotope records from bulk carbonate to determine perturbations of the carbon cycle prior to and following the extinction event. Particularly, attention was paid to finding evidence for a biocaicification crisis. Furthermore, carbonate C-isotope records were compared with new organic C-isotope data from the Mingolsheim core in Germany for which also detailed palynological records were available. Our high-resolution carbonate C-isotope record from Italy shows a large positive C-isotope excursion in the lowermost Hettangian that supports elevated PCO2 as a result of CAMP volcanism. The excursion occurs in an interval dominated by microbial limestones that appears to reflect strong fluctuations in carbonate chemistry and supersaturation state of the oceans during the Hettangian. Combined palynological and C-isotope data from Mingolsheim suggest that organic-C-isotope data need to be viewed with care, because bulk organic Cisotopes may be strongly controled by compositional changes.
