Fundamental Aspects of Direct Liquid-Alcohol Fuel Cells
Final Report Abstract
The developed high temperature/pressure DEMS set-up allows to gain kinetic and mechanistic information on electrocatalytic reactions under fuel cell relevant, but nevertheless welldefined reaction and transport conditions (catalyst loading and utilization, controlled mass transport). It can provide data for the mass transport and reaction modeling, and thus reduces the necessity of fuel cell measurements for catalyst screening. In contrast to the on-line mass spectrometric sensing of the exhaust of a fuel cell, which detects the integral response of the overall system, these model studies determine intrinsic kinetic and mechanistic reaction properties (differential reaction conditions). The temperatures necessary for complete oxidation of the fuel to CO2 can be estimated from the model studies by extrapolation of the temperature dependence of the overall reaction (measured Faradaic current) and of the partial current for CO2 production up to their crossing point. Due to its modular design, the HT/HP DBMS set-up can be easily modified for model studies of tbe oxygen reduction reaction at high temperatures/pressures, with the simultaneous detecfion of hydrogen peroxide under fuel cell relevani conditions.
