This project will focus on central aspects of the physics of Fermi systems and Fermi-Bose mixtures in weakly interacting gases. The general goal is a profound understanding of the interaction mechanisms in ultracold Fermi and Fermi-Bose gases. As compared to Bose systems, Fermi statistics leads to fundamentally different physics. Among the rich variety of phenomena predicted in these systems, we will focus on the study of correlations and phase transitions in pure and mixed systems. In particular, experimentes in 40K and 87Rb quantum gases on fundamental excitations in Fermi systems, their variation within a mixed system and related heating processes as well as interferometric detection of correlation functions of Fermi systems in optical lattices are planned. As a fundamental goal, the possibilities for a BCS transition of a degenerate 40K quantum gas in an optical lattice shall be explored.
