A core facility with a focus on “electron microscopy” is to be set up at the University of Augsburg. There are several transmission and scanning electron microscopes with extensive equipment, as well as appropriate laboratories for sample preparation. The planned core facility is intended to serve as a contact point for the effective use of these systems and, among other things, to enable easy access to the devices and expand the circle of users. In particular, the equipment and the associated analytical possibilities should be made more familiar and accessible to other interested parties within the university and externally. For this purpose, a professional web interface will be created that describes the technical possibilities and includes a corresponding booking system. Furthermore, a data management system will be implemented that enables easy access to the measurement data including archiving. This is not trivial because, depending on the measurement technology, very large data sets (100 GB) are created that have to be transferred and analyzed. As part of this core facility, there will be regular training events in order to pass on knowledge of the analytical possibilities and to be able to present current research results. Long-term collaborations within and across universities shell be established in order to increase the awareness of the center and promote scientific exchange.
