In our previous contribution, we showcased the assembly of heterobimetallic coinage metal complexes in a controlled manner by using orthogonal ligands. The distance of the metal ions to each other is essentially influenced by the ligand and the size of the ions. The photophysical properties of the complexes can be influenced by the specific combination of the metal ions, the distance of the ions and the electronic character of the donor ligand. In the proposed project, heterobimetallic coinage metal complexes with orthogonal ligands functionalized by a coumarin derivative as dye in the side chain will be synthesized. The research plan, which is based on our preliminary work, consist of different risk levels. A stepwise approach will be taken, first aiming at the synthesis of simple ligands and their complexes. By varying the metals and their distances from each other, the interaction between the metal ions and thus the "ligand-to-metal-metal charge-transfer" (LMMCT) as well as the resulting photophysical properties will be specifically controlled.
