Einfluß des Lösungsmittels auf die Gleichgewichts-Molekularverteilung in verdünnter Polymerlösung

Applicant Dr. Ulli Stier
Subject Area Preparatory and Physical Chemistry of Polymers
Term from 2002 to 2004
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5390933

The purpose of the project proposed here is to study theoretically the influence of the solvent quality (poor or good solvent) as well as the solvent density on the equilibrium molecular weight distribution in dilute polymer solutions by means of statistical mechanical methods. The knowledge and prediction of the equilibrium molecular weight distribution is of importance in the laboratory as well as in industrial processes, since many polymerisation reactions are carried out under equilibrium conditions. Prof. Gan and Prof. Eu have investigated the influence of solvent on a single polymer molecule by means of integral equations for pair correlation functions. The primary goal of the proposed work is to extend this work to a given number of polymer molecules which differ in chain length c, and calculate the equilibrium molecular weight distribution for a defined number average degree of polymerisation cn in the case of homopolymers and model proteins.
