The objective of the proposed project is the use of chalcogen bond switching for the design of smart switches and self-regulating receptors. The variations of the chalcogen bonds will be achieved by oxidation of the chalcogen centers or by exchange of halide ions at the tellurium center. In the case of smart switches, azo systems will be prepared that can or cannot be switched with light depending on the oxidation state of the chalcogen atom. The self-regulating chalcogen bond-based receptors actively work against their oxidation in an oxidative phase by selectively extracting the reducing agent for their reduction from another phase after oxidation has occurred.
