Ultrashort laser pulses provide a unique way to drive solid materials into extreme states of temperature and pressure. Relaxation of this high energy-density states gives rise to strong acoustic pertubations and shock waves. Within this project the dynamics of the associated transient lattice distortions will be directly monitored by ultrafast time-resolves x-ray diffraction using ultrashort multi-keV x-ray pulses from laser produced plasmas.
