The magnetic field originating from the Earth's interior provides valuable information on the structure of the lithosphere and the dynamics of the core. Extraction of this information requires accurate magnetic maps, so-called field models. Due to the multitude of disturbances, ranging from magnetospheric and ionospheric currents to secondary currents induced in the lithosphere and mantle, deriving an accurate field model is highly challenging. I propose to jointly invert CHAMP, Orsted and SAC-C satellite data together with all of the available magnetic observatory data using a comprehensive model for the relevant sources of the magnetic field. A key issue is the selection of a simple and well resolvable set of field model parameters. In contrast to the other on-going comprehensive magnetic field modelling project at GSFC/NASA, I propose to focus on the optimum resolution of the internal field.
