NSERC-DFG SUSTAIN: Sustainable CO2 Fixation in Amines

Subject Area Organic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 534279468

Here, the Beller and Schafer groups propose jointly several complementary sustainable synthetic approaches for the synthesis of valuable branched amine products. On the one hand, catalytic systems that will fix CO2 directly into amine products as well as improved catalysts for hydroaminoalkylations will be developed. Furthermore, domino N-methylation with CO2 or alkylation with renewables followed by hydroaminoalkylation with feedstock alkene substrates and vice versa to directly access selectively substituted amines should be established. Overall, this project targets scalable catalytic protocols to transform the synthesis of N-containing products by reducing waste generation and directly fixing CO2 or renewable carboxylates into high-value reactive amine intermediates. To achieve all these ambitious goals, this proposal will bring together two world-wide leading research groups in the catalytic synthesis of amines to develop a new sustainable tandem catalytic process for the generation of high-value amine building blocks directly from alkenes, CO2, a reducing agent and simple primary or secondary amines. Success in this project will enhance the sustainability of the fine chemical, agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries and will contribute to Canada’s and Europe’s leading engagement in the development of cleantech and Green Chemistry advances.
