Single crystal diffractometer with dual X-ray sources

Subject Area Molecular Chemistry
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 533833937

The new single crystal diffractometer with dual X-ray sources will be part of the diffractometer equipment park in the X-ray service department for structure analysis of Organic Chemistry Institute and will be used for structural elucidation of new compounds. Currently for this purpose are available a single crystal device with a conventional copper X-ray source and a classical CCD detector and a second device equipped with two microfocus X-ray sources (Cu and Mo) and an upgraded detector. One machine was purchased cost-effective with Institute funds as a used device and reaches at this point 15 years life-cycle, by this reason it currently leads to frequent breakdowns. The second available X-ray unit is older than 9 years and is used intensively at maximum work capacity. A third X-ray single crystal diffractometer (a rotary anode machine) has been taken out of service in 2022 after more than 25 years of use. The decommissioning of this very old X-ray machine and the most frequent failures of the diffractometer with the conventional copper X-ray source slow down considerably the operation of the service department and make this replacement urgent.
