The project examines the production of discursive figures around flight and asylum in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Switzerland since the 1970s. Refugee-related figures and categorizations are relevant for the perception of people on the move and for the way society deals with them as they produce a specific knowledge that is closely linked to processes of social closure or opening. The project investigates the power effects of discursive shifts on the basis of, among others, quantitative analyses of parliamentary minutes, newspaper articles and legal texts, as well as qualitative in-depth case studies.
