Final Report Year 2020

Final Report Abstract

The vision of EAM was to link, in the context of a world-class research and training program, fundamental science and real-world applications in the field of high-performance materials. FAU‘s unique combination of strengths in engineering and natural science led to the scientific concept of EAM, which focused on the science and engineering of hierarchical materials organized from nano- to macroscopic scales. Bridging the gap between nanoscale materials design and macroscopic devices required approaches that covered the entire range of time and length scales in synthesis and processing, modeling and simulation. Novel approaches were developed coherently with new methods for structure, property and process analytics. EAM’s scientific structure reflected its research philosophy. Major innovations and breakthrough technologies were developed in the three cross-sectional areas that were organized in sustainable interdisciplinary centers for Functional Particle Systems, Nanoanalysis and Microscopy and Multiscale Modeling and Simulation, and four Research Areas organized in process chains: engineering of Nanoelectronic Materials, Photonic and Optical Materials, Catalytic Materials and Lightweight Materials. One major lesson is that key unifying scientific principles are common to all EAM Research Areas and were therefore explored in the second funding period as four Focal Topics. EAM has shaped the structure of the FAU by installing 13 new professorships, by attracting the best early career researchers, providing new impetus for innovative teaching and implanting support structures for female researchers. EAM founded three new interdisciplinary centers and improved the research infrastructure by adding a total of 11,800 m2 new working space equipped with new cutting-edge instruments. We boosted interdisciplinary collaboration to an exemplary level, which is documented by our remarkable track record: in total 2518 papers were published in peer-reviewed journals (as of 12/2019), 34 % of which are joint publications of two or more EAM research teams. In particular, EAM acted as nucleus for new collaborative research initiatives (five collaborative research centers, two research training groups, two research units, one core facility,) and for the foundation of a new Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN). Technology Transfer was realized in strategic cooperations with companies, the foundation of transfer centers, and via joint demonstrators as the materialized outcome of collaborations between the Research Areas. Sustainability of EAM is guaranteed by its outstanding research infrastructure, and by the high quality of EAM researchers at the eight involved departments of FAU, supported by the 25 % allowance fund of the State Government of Bavaria. EAM will continue to act as nucleus for new research initiatives and as hub for worldwide visible excellence in materials and process research.
